Mobility Technologies in Automotive Industries

Mobility is a user-centric concept that recognizes the need for transportation products and services to be responsive to consumer demands, habits, and preferences.

According to CoxAutomotive Mobility White Paper(2019), emerging mobility trends such as ride hailing, car sharing, and subscription services are altering how individuals use, value, and relate to personal vehicles. These new mobility services are contributing to a shift in consumer preferences away from vehicle ownership and toward "vehicle usership," which involves experimenting with new business models that do not require the user to own a car and bear all the related costs.

Connected vehicles are gradually making their way onto the market, and they are projected to have a significant impact on the transportation sector in the second and third decades of this century. Future mobility solutions and cars will take advantage of ever-increasing computer power, high-speed networking, artificial intelligence deep learning algorithms, and quick and decentralized data handling. An entirely new variety of applications for smart and secure mobility appears to be increasingly viable because to rapid technological growth in the telecom, IT, and semiconductor industries.

As seen in Figure 1, the level of autonomy in vehicles is examined in five different categories. The level of autonomy plays a very prominent role in the mobility ecosystem.

Technically, mobility technologies in automotive can be separated into two technical sectors, according to the EPO Self-Driving Vehicles Report (2018). They are listed below briefly.

Automated Vehicle Platform: It refers to technology that are built into the vehicle. It roughly follows the functional architecture of an autonomous vehicle and includes major functional components such as I external environment perception, object analysis, decision and control functions, as well as (ii) essential computer means for their operation, and (iii) vehicle platform manipulation functions, which are responsible for the vehicle's motion.

Smart Environment: It is focused on the automobile and includes (i) technologies that allow vehicles to communicate and interact with one another and with their surroundings, as well as (ii) technologies that enable smart logistic services and operations.
