Sabancı University Nanotechnology Research and Application Center (SUNUM) is a 7,500 m2, state-of-the-art facility. The design of the facility provides an efficient, highly functional integration of education and research applications, in accordance with the university’s strategic vision of creating social and economic added-value out of knowledge and disseminating knowledge within society. In line with the emphasis on applied research with greater community impact, faculty members of Sabanci University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (FENS) joined forces in 2009 to form a new research center on multidisciplinary nanotechnologies.SUNUM is developed with 35 Million USD provided by State Planning Organization and Sabancı Foundation and became operational in January 2012. The Center provides valuable additional capabilities to the existing research infrastructure of FENS.
Main Industry: Technology Transfer
The laboratories house advanced capabilities and equipment such as atomic resolution imaging and chemical analysis, fast gene sequencing for different cells, deposition of multilayers of few atom thick metals and dielectrics.
Subsequent to a very competitive screening process by the Ministry of Development, SUNUM was selected as one of the four National Research Infrastructures in 2017. It is currently re-structuring within its host organization, establishing a new legal identity while maintaining close organic ties with Sabancı University.
SUNUM is engaged in highly effective multidisciplinary research programs in:
- advanced materials,
- nano-bio technology, nano-medicine,
- nano-electronics, nano-optics,
- micro/nano fluidics, micro/nano-electromechnical systems and
- renewable energy systems.
Research topics are chosen to be:
- Based on regional and sectoral needs and priorities,
- Aligned with national policies of technology and economics and
- Cross-cutting in science and technology in the global arena
